Martial Guilds

Equestrian Guild
Within this guild members learn the skills of horsemanship and jousting fundamental to both our performance and in regards to the requirements of the skill of jousting for Knighthood in the AOA. It is also an unofficial training camp for other, professional Jousting companies.
Arms Guild
Four forms of sword and weapon use exist within the AOA. The first is choreographed combat, used in almost every one of our performances. This is taught by an experienced instructor, usually the Master of Arms or another person who holds the rank of Master in the skill of choreographed combat. The second is Fencing, allowing members to enjoy a safe competition venue for this Medieval/Renaissance art. This skill can be learned from almost any Knight, as well as others in the group. The third is “Boffer” combat. This involves the use of foam padded weapons and a simple rules system that allows for anyone to have a safe time beating upon their friends. The fourth is archery. This is a skill that has assisted man in his survival throughout history. During pre-historic times man used this skill to feed himself and his people. In the Middle Ages, archers were an invaluable commodity in battle. This was one of the skills required of many squires during this time. The same can be said of our Knighthood program. Other skills such as spear throwing, strategy, and weapon and armor construction can be learned as well.
