Knighthood
(Martial Program)
In Arthurian legend, knights served the crown and dedicated their lives to chivalry, courtesy, honor, and protection of the innocent. In The AOA, the knighthood serves as a home for members aspiring to those same ideals.
If, upon completing Page requirements, a member decides to enter the AOA Martial Program, they must be sponsored as a squire to an existing Knight. This Knight has the duty and responsibility to help prepare the squire for knighthood.
Becoming a Knight in the AOA requires proficiency of arms and fealty (loyalty and service) to the organization. Proficiency of arms is taught, and fealty is measured by dedication to Arthurian ideals (the Orders of the Roses). As there are 2 Orders of the Roses, there are 2 orders of Knighthood:
Knight of the White Shield
In Arthurian literature, these were the knights in their first year of knighthood who had not yet earned the right to bear a coat of arms on their shields. They were appointed defenders of the Queen, at whose hand they were to learn the Courtly Graces. White Shield Knights must hold the Red Rose, and show proficiency in 4 of the 7 defined areas.
Knight of the Round Table
In Arthurian legend, these were Knights of renown and prowess, expected to serve as examples of chivalry and courtesy to all persons. In the AOA, Round Table Knights must hold the White Rose and show proficiency in 6 of the 7 defined areas. In addition to this, before a Knight of the White Shield is considered for ascension to Round Table status he/she must sponsor a squire to the level of White Shield Knight.

After completing their requirements, candidates for Knighthood sit vigil with their arms and armor. They are then dubbed and receive the gold chain and white belt of Knighthood. If they have qualified in jousting, they are entitled to wear the spurs of Knighthood. Round Table Knights are afforded the right to wear personal heraldry.
